A first degree will mainly influence the outer layer of skin, known as the epidermis. This can be shown through a reddening and drying of the area. It is painful and will typically only last for around a week. Topical treatments can be applied to speed up the healing process. Second degree burns can come in two parts. A superficial partial thickness burn will generally be characterized through swelling, reddening and a blotchy look to the skin. This burn will go to the superficial regions of the dermis.

The skin will appear most, and while it is painful, it should be healed in up to three weeks. It is important to treat them correctly since failing to do so may result in an infection. If the burned area is larger than three inches and it is on a more significant area, then it should be treated more seriously. Second degree deep partial thickness burns will move down into the deeper layers of the dermis. This will be evidenced by bloody blisters and some blanching of the skin. The skin will appear moist and can lead to scarring. It will often heal in a matter of weeks but can worsen to a third degree burn if not treated correctly. These forms may also need a skin graft.

Third degree burns move entirely through the dermis layer of the skin and may effects the muscle, fat and bone below. They can result in permanent damage and should be treated by a professional. They can make the skin look charred or a dry, leathery and white. The nerves will likely be damaged at this point so pain may not be felt. Excision will be necessary and sometimes amputation.
